We recognize that sucking is actually a natural behavioral instinct which babies and also small children have. They might make use of fingers, pacifiers, or other objects for this purpose. It especially calms down small children before going to sleep as well as it makes them feel good as well as secure during this time. However, this can result in really serious issues in jaw development as well as in teeth positioning if the thumb sucking continues even after the appearance of permanent teeth. Depending on how serious and regular the sucking is, this can lead to minor or maybe more serious dental and also jaw conditions that can be corrected by orthodontic treatment. Early orthodontic treatment might be done by a pediatric dentist to prevent jaw problems and further malpositioning of teeth in young children.

Normally, kids cease this practice naturally within ages of two and four. Using pacifiers will likely not protect against damage that thumb sucking could cause. The impact is nearly the same. The one main difference would be that sucking with pacifier may be controlled unlike thumb sucking. It would be ideal to seek the advice of your pediatric dentist for early orthodontic treatment options that can help your child when the thumb sucking persists and also if it happens to be extreme.

Because little ones commonly suck their fingers and thumb the moment they feel insecure, attempt to understand and find the cause of the anxiety and eliminate it. It is likely that the sucking will cease if this problem is removed. It could also be a very good practice to reward the young children when they are not sucking, mainly during some difficult times or stressful moments for them (while being separated from parents for any quick period of time, for instance). When going to your pediatric dentist, he really should motivate your child to stop sucking as well as endeavor to explain to him in easy terms exactly what could possibly happen to him if he keeps with this particular practice and what treatments might be needed. When the preceding ideas do not work, you may also try bandaging the thumb or putting a sock on the hand at nighttime to keep the little one from sucking.

If this habit doesn’t stop prior to the appearance of permanent front teeth, the consequences could cause bad bite and malpositioning of the permanent teeth (particularly the front teeth) causing them to protrude which, subsequently, can result in additional damage to your child’s oral health. Check with your pediatric dentist on what the recommended early orthodontic treatment would be to remedy your kid’s thumb sucking if it persists and is intense in nature.

Loss of tooth is rather a frequent condition among numerous people, with many losing their teeth as a consequence of tooth decay, gum disease, and inattention to correct dental and oral care. Missing teeth may perhaps contribute to a low self-confidence as well as restrict the proper functions of eating, drinking and talking.

Dental implants serve as an artificial tooth root created from biocompatible materials, which are implanted into the jawbone through a pain-free and basic process. These implants are especially designed to suit one’s unique dental situation. These are created to replicate teeth and really feel absolutely natural yet still be totally functional. They also protect against further tooth decay or damage to the mouth. Dental implants made from titanium provide you with a little more durability and strength for longer lasting functionality.

This will be the basis why getting teeth implants may be the most sought after restorative dental procedure. It truly is both an effective and hassle-free treatment. A dental implant procedure may be the proper choice for people who are missing a single tooth or even a whole mouthful of teeth. Dental implants specialists can easily offer you full mouth restoration with partial and complete implants. Regardless of the type of the problem connected with loss of tooth, a dental implant treatment can give a simple answer with proven success.

Dental implants are actually the best practical option for missing teeth. As opposed to removable dentures which have a tendency to slip and create awkward clicking sounds while you talk, implants are a fixed, permanent treatment. Naturally, you won’t also be able to just lose your dental implants like in the case of dentures. Teeth implants are exceptionally long-lasting, comfortable and will help provide protection to the other healthy teeth.

Replacing missing teeth is vital to your personal wellness and aids in preserving very good oral hygiene. Having a complete set of shiny white teeth will definitely make any person feel much more confident with himself. Therefore, a dental implant procedure will be able to combat the unfavorable effects tooth loss has on both your self-confidence and wellness. When you require restorative dental treatments, it’s always worth speaking to a highly trusted dental professional concerning the advantages of dental implants as a treatment choice.

Do you think dental retainers have to look plain, clear and simple? Not necessarily! You
want to change your mind and spread the word that personalized retainers are definitely
the way to go. We believe this, so we created a website featuring an application for
design that allows kids of all ages (yes adults get retainers too!) To create an eye
catching design for their “about to be created” dental retainer.

You may ask yourself why. Why is this really necessary?

First ask yourself why does anybody decorate anything? Ever since cave paintings,
humans want to create images & design that reflect something about them selves. In
recent years, the trend of personalizing has been on the rise. Think about ipod covers,
custom tshirts, custom minicoopers and a bevy of other products that allow the consumer to add their own personal touch to the product that they’re getting.
Dental retainers are a product, that although functional, can benefit from personalization.
When you put your own “brand” on a dental retainer that you are about to get, you
instantly create the personal connection with an otherwise inanimate object. For teens
and kids this type of connection is invaluable when it comes to compliance.

Kids and teens that are engaged and feel a personal connection to an item, meaning
ownership and they “stake a claim”; well it’s safe to say that they will take greater care
in making sure that retainer doesn’t get left behind in the trash. Most often times parents
are the ones who pay for retainer replacements…. It’s an easy come easy go situation
for the kid. Dental retainer replacements can cost hundreds of dollars, but with youth it’s
often difficult to convey the actual worth of something like this. This is where allowing
them in easy way to personalize and brand their dental retainer can go a long way in
making them responsible. To reach any young person, the best ways to make it look ”
cool”..

This is where retainersby.me comes in. We’ve developed a web site that can be used
for free by anybody anywhere, in order to quickly create a visually appealing and
oftentimes a very” cool” looking dental retainer. We empower people and let them be
involved in the process of getting their retainer made. This makes it way more exciting,
and pretty soon you find people anticipating the retainer’s arrival, as opposed to
dreading it. Patients become proud owners of something that they have had a hand in
designing. A retainer become something to talk about and show off to friends, instead of
hiding away and trying to minimize it’s sheer existence.

In conclusion, disecting the residual benefits of having a personally branded retainer can
continue on and on. Most of all, ” kids just wanna have fun” and we have an experience
here that combines fun, design, and dental retainers.

Watch our videos, join us, share us, explore the site in 3D and check out the retainer
design application today!

Queens is a place in New York that has a variety of dental facilities that a person can choose from.

Is your practice offering deals through Groupon or Living Social? If so, you may be breaking the law and could face consequences. Even Dan Ellis, the vice president of Align Technology (makers of Invisalign) does not endorse these deals for Invisalign. Here are some highlights:

Ellis writes: “Because both your services and each Invisalign treatment are unique (like the needs of each patient), we do not believe that either are appropriate for the Web-based, group-buying social coupon process.” Patients and doctors both should be protected by an exam that determines whether the patient is even a candidate for treatment.

Many complaints have been registered claiming: “the use of daily deal and group buying sites does not serve the best interest of the patient and is unethical and demeaning to the dental profession.”

Also, when you use Groupon you have to share revenue with them. This can be considered fee splitting. Ellis also noted that in many states fee splitting is prohibited with third parties or non-practicioners.

So what’s the best advice? Speak with your lawyer prior to any such offering or avoid the offerings alltogether.

For more information, read this article: Your Dentist may be breaking the law…

Ok, so we all know there are some really cheesy pick up lines out there. The same goes for marketing to the dental industry. Often times the pitch has a few good key buzz words in it and promises of crazy results. I have so many doctors who call me to tell me about the latest offer they have received. As I listen on the phone my eyes roll and I am amazed how many doctors fall for the pitch. It fits in with the Facebook “snake oil” I often blog about. Most of these offers are for what we call “Black Hat SEO”.

In the computer world there are forces of good and evil. I know that sounds really nerdy – but it’s true. We tend to call them “Black Hat” or “White Hat”. There are black hat hackers and white hat hackers. There are also black hat and white hat SEO firms!!!

I found a great article that I wanted to link to and give props for – here it is:

http://www.business.com/blog/3-black-hat-seo-pickup-lines-you-never-want-to-fall-for/

Meanwhile here’s a synopsis, beware of the following three pickup lines:

1. “We can guarantee you’ll be on the first page of Google inside of the month.”

2. “You don’t have to pay until you see the results you want!”

3. “SEO is going to be the answer to all your online marketing needs

SEO can be your most valuable tool but needs a strong foundation.

The faster you rise in rankings the faster you can fall!

Black Hat SEO techniques can get you delisted from Google.

…and one final quote from the article:

“White hat SEO is incredibly long-term, which means you’ll have to be a little patient. Great campaigns with a lot of potential are often cut off at the knees because site owners got jumpy and pulled the plug too soon.”

I have often been asked what to do with a negative review, social media post, or comment. The number one answer is to have positive opinions overwhelm negative opinions. What’s one bad review admist 50 good reviews? Sadly you will not serve everyone perfectly, there will be mistakes or issues at times and it is in their right to complain.

The problem with social media and Facebook specifically is what we call third party content. Third party content is content created by others that you do not control – yet it reflects on you and your business. For instance, let’s say you have added a like page to your home page like I did. I received a complaint about my site and went to see what the user was talking about and someone had liked me and had changed their avatar/icon to a swastika. I later noticed someone with a questionable image of a sexual nature. So my home page reflected values that I was not controlling and could not realistically monitor, police, or patrol. I dropped my like page add-in code.

Let’s say you have a wonderful Facebook page with thousands of friends who follow you or like you and unfortunately one has a bad experience once and a short fuse. Next thing you know everyone is reading a post on your page about something horrible you have seemingly done. In some cases it would be better not to have a Facebook page! Unfortunately, mathematically, at some point someone will write a bad post and this does not mean you should abandon the medium. Instead, you should learn how to deal with it.

I have read many articles on how to handle negative social media and I decided to continually post and update links here to good articles rather than regurgitate some.

Here’s a start, this article is nicely organized and comprehensive. The only important item I would add is to not get in an argument online. Your Facebook wall is not the place for you to look argumentative or like you have lost your cool.

http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/7-tips-for-dealing-with-upset-facebook-fans/

QR Codes and dentistry

So how can QR technologies apply to dentistry? For now, the potential marketing audience is limited to smart phone users. Unlike our restaurant or food label examples, few people decide on a dentist when they are walking by their storefront. Many uses of QR codes do not apply well to dentistry, but there are still many marketers trying to sell them because it’s the hot topic.

For dentistry, here are some basic ideas:

The QR poster in the front office and front window that contains a vCard – This can be a quick way for patients to save your information in their cell phone. The poster can also suggest they save the appointment in their smart phone calendar. Think about it this way, the smart phone now has your address which it can integrate with their GPS software, it has your phone number which it can then dial, it has a calendar application they can schedule the appointment and reminders with, and it also has links to your web site.

Traditional advertising – place QR codes linking to web sites on magazine ads. You have to pay for ad space and a QR code is a great way to virtually extend it. The user sees the ad and if they want more information they can scan the code. Users without smart phones would need to retype web addresses.

For more advanced purposes, we have to think outside the box a little.

Reviews – reviews are very important for doctors. Online users often decided which doctor to visit based on reviews. There are over 50 review sites that Google sees as official citation sites. It is important that your reviews come from various sites and sources. You should register your listing on about 5 of these (Google, Kudzu, Yahoo Local, CitySearch, Yelp, etc). Generate 5 QR codes that link to each of the 5 review sites. Print 5 different versions of business sized cards and a note to “Please Rate Us!” Save the cards at the front desk and when you have a patient that you are pretty sure had a good experience and a smart phone, give them the card and ask if they will use it to review you. You can even help them scan the code on the spot if they are not familiar with it and literally have a great review posted minutes after seeing a patient.

Metrics – there are some QR products that provide metrics about who is scanning your code.

Give something of value back – You are asking the user to do a small thing with their phone, why not give them something back. At the airport I saw a bank advertising with QR codes. Instead of selling their services, the bank had free eBooks for downloading to read in flight. Other codes went to game downloads. Give your patients something of value like a coupon off their next visit.

Referrals – Use a metric based QR program and print a receipt with a custom QR code for each patient. Tell them to make copies of the sheet for friends or family and for everyone that scans their code and comes in – they get $25 credit toward their account.

Treasure chests!!! Kid’s love the treasure chests at the local dentist. Give them a scavenger hunt! Create a scavenger hunt where each clue is a QR code posted somewhere (online, a sticker on a friendly business window, etc). The codes link to a site with more clues or a phone number with a message with more clues, etc. If they follow the trail give them free Xbox games!

These are just a few ideas – I’d love to hear more of your own in the comments or email them to me.

Future of QR Codes

Unfortunately, there are many advances coming out in the next few years which will most likely replace QR codes – so don’t fall in love with them. Photo recognition will become less expensive and will replace QR Codes.

There are worries that as more and more companies jump on the QR code bandwagon that consumers will start to see them as visual litter. Wine being bottled now may not hit the shelves for a few years; imagine 3-4 years from now when all of the wine bottles on the shelf have “old technology”.

Use QR codes wisely!

Who uses QR Codes?

So now you know what a QR Code is and how to read one – the next step is fairly intuitive – QR Codes are utilized by smart phone users. Without a reader and software, the QR Code is just an interesting ink blot.

How to market with QR Codes

Rule #1 in marketing is to know your audience. So your QR Code audience is made up of semi-savvy smart phone users. Ideally if the code links to a web site, that site should be optimized for smart phones. Let me give you samples of how QR Codes are used outside dentistry, and then we will apply similar ideas to dentistry.

The product label – one of my favorite implementations is on wine bottle labels. Imagine you are in a store and you don’t know which wine to settle on. Take a picture of the QR code with your phone and then your phone browses to a web site with reviews on the wine you scanned. The web page also has a more detailed description of the wine than will fit on the label. It also has food pairing recommendations. Awesome!

Graveyards? That’s right! In Japan the popular thing is to mark headstones with QR codes. You only have so much room to write on a headstone – but by scanning a code you can be taken to a web site that talks about the deceased and includes pictures or information about kin.

Location based marketing – Imagine walking through the local square and you are not sure which neat location to eat at. Some restaurants will post QR Codes outside on posters that link to their Google Places account (Google even used to generate your QR code for you and provide free posters). From the Google listing, the potential customer can read menus, reviews and get coupons.

Business cards – your business card already has your contact information on it, but you can also add a QR code with your vCard information embedded. Now if someone wants to save your name, address and phone number they don’t have to type it in. All they have to do is scan it with their phone and it’s saved electronically.
